I was wondering if anyone has done this swap before. I have a 80 impala that im building a engine for, a friend of mine has a built rear end out of a 80s el camino. Im just wondering how much fabbing would have to be done cause im almost postive ts not a bolt in project. any input will be greatly appreciated. thanks

the g body rear end is more than likely a 7.5 inch 10 bolt, when you say built what do you mean. they are not a strong axle, and you would be hard pressed to bring them up to the level of a stock nine inch.
off the top of my head the g-body axle will be skinnier than you impala, the g body is 57.75 inches from W.M.S to W.M.S. I don't know the specific width of the b-body, but im thinking its several inches wider. i believe that the upper control arm mounts will be different as well.
figure out what you have, its possible that its a larger, stronger axle than the one your looking at swapping in. or it may have the same internals as the "built" g body axle and you can swap the good stuff from the g body axle into yours.
You'd be better off buying an 8.5" rear end from a B-body that has the same wheel bolt pattern as your current one. Unless yours already has an 8.5" rear. http://www.oldsmobility.com/10bolt-tech.htm has ID pics if you scroll down about halfway.

Generally B-body 8.5" axles can be bought for dirt cheap, and good G-body axles can be sold for a relatively higher price. Best bet is to just buy a B-body diff, you can use one from a 90's impala SS even, they come with posi and disc brakes. I've heard of people putting B-body diffs into g-bodys but not the other way.

My 79 Caprice had a 7.5 in it but I installed a Chrysler 8 3/4 out of a 72 monaco wagon. This was when I was 16 and couldn't afford a mopar. I still have the car too. Personally I would bet your 80 has a 8.5 in it otherwise they're not hard to come by, not to mention G body rears are narrower than the b body. Whatever you decide good luck at it.

Thanks a lot for the input, ill definently be looking for a impala rear end! disc brakes sound nice and ive found some rebuild kits that include posi.
