g-body front suspension bushings questions

Hello guys,

I need some help with my 78 Monte Carlo front suspension.
I am rebuilding it with new bushings, shocks, ball joints etc.
Because I am in Bulgaria, and my Monte is the only one in the country, there are not any experienced machine shop/person to ask I hope to get some help from you as always, thank you!

1. Lower control arm bushings were flared. How can I do this flare? Can anyone show me the tool that does it?

2. How should I insert upper control arm bushings? Also, I got set of bushings that are a bit different, see the attached picture. Which one goes where?

If you need additional info I will be glad to provide it.

Thanks for the help,
Ivo

i'm thinking the bushings just press in on the bottom. i've changed them before & i don't remember them being flared. the ones pictures looks like their the same just different colors. they will just press in too.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for replies.
I have Chiltons manual, and they said on "later models" the bushings are flared, so it should be done when reinstalling them with special tool, but nothing more Actually, the bushings were flared, see the pictures. This is lower control arm front bushing, the thinner one. Rear bushing was not flared.

For the upper bushings, the only difference I see is the rounding on the black one. They came in set together, that's why I thing there is some purpose. The other set I have is the same, one black and one metal bushings. There is washer only on one side of the control arm shaft, may be this is the point See the picture.

What do you think?

Thanks for the help,
Ivo

myself, i would just press them in & not worry about the flare (as long as their in there tight.) if your worried about it, just put four small tack welds on them cooling with water after each weld.

Hi guys,
Hi the nirto man,
I pressed in the new bushings. They fit tight so I did not do any flare or welding. I will see what will happen
The car is driven rarely so I hope everything will be fine

Thanks for the help
Ivo

I believe this Flaring occurs when you tighten the control arm bolts up.I think enough of the steel shell protudes that it distorts when the bolt is torqued.I have changed out several sets, both upper and lower.Never seen or heard of a tool to flare. Dale
