G80 rear end

Does it make any sense to install a g80 rear end in a '51 CHevy (car) street rod?

Depends on what the G80 rear end is out of. If it's a truck G80 then don't bother. If it's a car G80 then it's probably worth it, but that also depends on what it came out of.

G80 rear end

Thanks for the feed back. The G80 came from a '96 Blazer 4x4. There wasn't any glove box door since it was in a salvage lot. I only realized it after I opened the case to pull the axles for new seals and bearings. The Blazer had a 4.3L so I figured the rear end would match up well for my '51. The measurements are just about perfect. My car only runs a straight six with a T5 trans with 0.73 5th gear. The G80 is a 3.73. I don't think I will over power the drive train, but I don't want to do a lot of work with something that won't serve me well. The gears all look good in the rear end. I am wondering about the tendency for these things to grab up and put a lot of stress on the unit. What are your thoughts?

The G80 locking mechanism doesn't survive well when you do high rpm spin outs that require it to lock quickly. However, its not likely to fall apart in normal operation while driving. Unless you plan to drag race or use the vehicle for some type of mud truck competition, the G80 should not be a problem.

There are several different G80 differentials. Almost all of the truck G80 differentials are the Governor Lock. Some of the '60s Chevy truck 12 bolts got the Eaton Posi. The cars had G80 differentilas like the Eaton Posi, Traction Lock and Auburn. Some 3rd gen F bodies and some G bodies got the Governor Lock, but they were more rare. In your case it's probably not going to hurt anything to use the Governor Lock. Is this the 7.5 rear end or the 8.5?
