As far as I know it will be a 9 inch. Probably about 60 inches wide. This should be the stronger housing with the tapered center. Could have 28 or 31 spline axles, depending on what engine was in it.
Yup, all Galaxie based cars were 9" back to 1957. Somewhere online you can find a width chart. I forget what the 31 spline break in point was, older Fords were 28 spline.
I've pulled 31 spline axles out of a '65 Galaxy that had a 390 in it. You never know about a 9 inch Ford. I've got nodular cases from 28 spline rear ends and I've pulled 31 spline axles out of trucks that had a 302, so Ford seemed to just use whatever was handy at the moment. The only way to figure it out is to just take it apart and check.
I think around '68 was when they started using the 9 3/8 rear end in some of the big cars, but I think '67 should be the 9 inch. There are no after market performance parts for the 9 3/8, so you don't want one of those.
The 9 3/8" rear was used in trucks as well. There is an easy way to identify them by the ribs on the casting, just google it if you want to know. Off the top of my head, I forget.
The 9 3/8 has a curved rib at the top that isn't on any of the 9 inch cases.
