Galaxy rear end in Chevelle

My brother has a 69 Chevelle with highway gears and an open dif. He found a Ford 9in from a 68 Galaxy 500 fastback and was wondering if it would fit in the Chevelle. Are the dimensions the same (i.e. distance from hub to hub, spring perches.)? Will it fit or is there any modifications that need to be done to put it in?

Not to be a jerk....

I was having the same kind of questions in regards to a 53 Chevy pick up I have. The best answer I got was to go and measure it with a tape measure if it is close.

I know it's not the answer you would like to hear, but it gives you positve results.

re: Galaxy rear end in Chevelle

A Chevelle has rear coil springs, and if I remember right a Galaxie has rear leaf springs.

65 - 66 Galaxies were coils SO....a 68 is most likely coils too.....

But they are MOST LIKELY too wide.....

Galaxie to Chevelle

The Galaxie has coil spring rear suspension, but you would be better served to get a 9 inch out of a 73 or later Torino, as they had coil spring rears as well, and the Galaxie rear would be too wide.

re: Galaxy rear end in Chevelle

thanks for the replies guys. He wanted info on this because it's supposed to be $90 and the Ford 9in carriers are easy and cheap to find.

Ford rear in Chevelle

Curious, what size engine you are going to run in this Chevelle.
If you are going to be making less than 400 HP, you might also consider a Ford 8 inch. Cheaper, lighter, and nearly as tough. In fact, a 28 spline 9 inch and an 8 inch axle spline are the same. Some guys around here have welded short 8 inch axle tubes onto 9 inch centers, using the 8 inch axles and tubes out of Mavericks and the like. Makes a good low budget narrowed rear end.

re: Galaxy rear end in Chevelle

he's only running around 350 horse out of a 350ci. The only problem is we don't have the experience with rear-ends to do anything custom to them.

re: Galaxy rear end in Chevelle

And my lack of ford knowledge drummed up some good answers for you.

If the axle in there now only needs a gear change, why not consider doing just that?

With the information on the subject on the internet, and the right parts, you can change a ring & pinion and do it right in just one day- PLUS you will learn something new and be able to say you did that yourself.

I changed mine with a used set and everything checked out as to what all the printed stuff I found on a few different websites said it should be like. Mine has been going for a year and a half now without any indication of a problem and I had never changed a set of gears in anything more than a lawn tractor axle before that.

If you can rebuild an engine or transmission, you can certainly change a set of gears. If not you can take your time and still get it right.

Super Sports of that year had the 12 bolt rear end. 1968 to 1972 interchange and a 66- 67 also fits but is a little narrower. A lot of these rears are 3.73 and lower.......with a POSI.

A direct bolt in......but like said above.......LEARN....how to set up gears...it is not a black magic science....but a lot of folks think it is....

Once you know how....you can make a lot of "side" money doing gear swaps....I did for years....before I got old and lazy...

Rear end job

Unless your stock rear end is trashed, I would just do as was mentioned. Go with your stock rear and just put some decent gears in it. Save yourself a lot of measuring, cutting, and welding work.
