garage door openers and/or springs..

Hello.
my garage door is the old type solid folding door, not the newer fiber or sheet metal.. it's heavy.
one of the springs broke and that took out the door opener, as the nylon gears didn't stand a chance..
the springs are marked yellow, and I'm told that the painted mark is it's strenth .
is there any harm in using the next stronger spring to make manual opening easier?
and I've heard but never seen what they call safty cables that contain the springs incase they fail.. any insight there??
if I buy another opener whats better for a heavy door screw or chain drive..
I might see if sears can get replacement gears and if so, use what I have..
but it's at least 20+ years old..
thanks for any help.. as opening this with only one spring is back breaking

Spring color isn't ALWAYS consistent , best to use the spring manufacturers chart to determine the correct spring rate , ALWAYS replace the springs in pairs [both sides] , opener gear sets are available online for less than $20 , takes about an hour to replace them . Most sears openers are liftmaster [chamberlain] , very common part .

opener

20 yrs old.. trash it.. u can use heavier springs just so long as u balance the door with no opener attached. the cables are good, if u break a spring when its closed it can be very destructive if it comes apart. screw or chain really don't matter its really the HP of the opener.. u most likely need a 1hp or larger if a double door. but the main thing is spring set-up..

For those of us on a {small} fixed income , $20 to repair an otherwise good opener versus $140 for a new , cheaply made opener [ & the new ones are really cheap junk] is , to me a no-brainer , plus I really like to fix things !!

If it has a Sears door opener and those gears are trashed, you can buy a set of gears for less then 10 bucks or an entire rebuild kit for about $25 - and ebay is the least expensive, whichever way you go. It will take you about 2 hours the first time, 30 minutes the next.

As far as a new spring, get both sides. Both HD and Lowe's carry them. Take one of the old ones with you to match.

Safety cables saved me from a clonk on my thinly haired scalp - again, HD or Lowes have kits or cheaper yet, some cable and clamps.

I used the full gear kit, but also have rebuilt this shaft and gear set for the next time or for the other door:

thanks guys, and yes I planned on doing both springs,, and yes 10-30 bucks is better than a 149-219 new one..

I HATE having my 50 year old garage door with the springs inches away from my cars front fenders! DAMN I hate it. I really need to replace it before it causes me some serious headache. I ran cables thru the springs so if they broke they couldn't likely get all the way over to the car but there are other factors, it just isn't good at all.

That looks very familiar, rebuilt ours about 6 months ago. I bought the gear on ebay. think it was $6.

I am not a believer in the big hp thing with openers. I don't see where it makes much difference at all unless it operates at a faster feet per minute.

1/2 hp or 1 hp they use the same nylon gears, so if the motor rpm is the same, then the only speed change would be with a sprocket. (chain drive)

I do not believe there is a discernible difference in the weight of a garage door when the counter balance springs are PROPERLY adjusted. The door should only need 10# or so of force to lift it.

I prefer the torsion springs over the extension springs as they are far more adjustible.

Just $.02 worth of my rambling thoughts.
