garage door spings

I had to thank my lucky stars I've got those retaining cables running through the middle of the overhead door springs today.

I was futzing in my garage today when a spring broke. Scared the living crap outta me. I thought it was going to zing off my head. Anyone else have that happen?

deadly

Matter of fact that same thing happened to my brother in-law, although he was in his back yard at the time and his garage door was closed, no cables on his and the bottom eye snapped and the spring went through his shingles on the roof. he now has new springs with cables and a patched roof!

I can't imagine how much damage that one spring would have done to all the stuff in my garage. Two feet of 1 1/4" spring bouncing around......

I wouldn'tve wanted to be in there without the cable to catch it.
Heck, I didn't want to be in there when it broke and the cable did catch it!!
