Garage ideas

Ran across THIS HERE SITE that has some good ideas if you are building a garage. Something that we have done/need to do/need to expand. The ideas are good to have bookmarked in case the time comes and you say..."Man I wish I'd of thought of that" I try to save ideas and pics of garages on the 'puter just for future reference/dreaming!!

One thing I didn't see on that site was the position of the air compressor. When I build my shop that thing is going outside, outback with a shed over it to keep it out of the weather. It is so loud and runs quite a bit when I use high volumes of air.

GREAT reading Kev, thanks for the source. I never really thought about an oil heater. Everytime dad and I change the oil in our cars, we just put the old back into the empty quarts and back in the cases. Cases get hauled off to PepBoys when we get enough of 'em. Now I want to try to build one of those furnaces and use it all when I get my own place.

Has anyone done a pit-style garage? If anything, I was thinking about at least a 3 foot depression good enough to fit a creeper and some tools in. I don't need to stand up that bad.

Good thread Kevan, I did notice that most guys didn't like windows and exit doors, probably because they take up wall space, thats normal hotrodder thinking i guess, more room for tools and such, but what happens if there is a fire,?? You need ways to get out of that building, at least a exit on each end or there about, also the windows let in sunlite and warmth ,[ also a exit] electricity is expensive , just ask anyone that lives in Calif, storage is another factor, attic space, I insulated and sheetrocked y ceiling and then put a grid ceiling 3" below that, kinda like double insulation, might be a little overkill but it works to keep my bill down, and there is about 4000 sq ft of storage, I have a overhead door on each end , makes it easier to get cars in and out, I also keep ALL non moble cars on dollys [ make them MOBLE] so if there is a FIRE, the least I can do is have a chance to get them out, I was a contractor for 30 years so and paid some high insurance premiums so yeah I am safety minded, its your life protect it, and a isolated room for a compressor is nice like short step mentioned, Its nice to DREAM isn't it<<<<>>>>

Mine is 30x48 pole building enter on the west side 30ft,seen alot of buildings they put the over head door in the middle of the end you loose alot of wall space. Had my entry door 36in,and overhead 16ft x 8ft, shoved as far to the north as possible left about 9ft of wall space,nice for storage on side,also remember some sort of moisture barrier keep floor from sweating,just some thoughts.

If you guys get a chance, post a pic of your garages. Might make for some good ideas for others. I'd like to add on to mine. It's a 28x36 and I divided it into two bays. One bay that I plan on keeping the car parked in (when ever it's done) is 14'x24' and there is a 4' deep closet on the end for storage. The other side to work in is 22'x28' but could stand to be a bit longer. Then the bench takes up one wall. I'd like to add a 24'x28' on the back and set it up to do the dirty work. I'd also like to add a bathroom and running water in it. That's going to be a little ways down the road though.

Hey Kevin, who did the garden out front?? Thats right where I'd put a junk pile. I like the ceiling fans and the divided space's. I have to walk around engines and trans cases and little tool boxes and car seats and jacks, and thats just on one side to get to the BIG tool box??? My garage was never that clean after I moved in and started collecting parts. My wife would go crazy in there, nothing to pick up or move!!! I'll post a picture of the inside of my garage after I get all three project cars inside for the winter. And I still plan to rewire the 37 Dodge and drop and engine into the 65 Chevelle. My wife about died when I put air conditioning in my garage, but she would love that patio, or is that an outside work area? Great place for a parts washer and a swing.

Thats a CLEAN shop Kevan, must have a lot of time on your hands, I don't have any pictures of the outside of my shop but do have a few of part of the inside, the one showing the back of the boat is looking south into the back driveway, and the one showing the front of the boat is looking north, it has another 16 ft door to the right facing the street, it is 40 ft wide and 60 ft long , full of crap, I plan on adding 15ft wide by 60 on the west side this spring, and cut 2 double wide doors in for access for tools, Bill P.S. i'm not sure how to do the picture thing so don't be surprised if none appear

I have a 30x48 pole barn and it is stuffed to the rafters. Of course, if I would finish up a few projects I would have more room but right now I need to add on and will probably do so this spring. 26x40 T'd in from the North with enough rafter height for a lift. I already have heat out there so that will be easy to do and I will gain some real working room where I can have all of my metal working equipment set up and usable... That will be nice.
I don't have any real good photo's but I'm not real proud of the mess it's in most of the time so don't plan on seeing any for a while...
