Garage smells bad, cant take it anymore

Ever since I picked up my motor and rear-end and put it in the garage it smells bad! Really bad, like old fart or something similar. I'm sure it must be the engine or rearend....but why? ANd what can I do about it? (and no they cant go outside)

Mike, it's probably the rear end. Unfortunately I think you're stuck with the "stank" for now. Where were these items previously? Did anything make a home in them and possibly die? Possibly a skunk had a love affair with one of these items? Smell the oil in the engine as well. That may narrow it down to which one it might be. Burnt oil smells really bad too!

About 15 years ago I had a bottle of limited slip additive sitting on a small table just inside the garage. It somehow got knocked off and the lid came off... stinky! I didn't really mind it, but mom sure didn't like it too much.

Rock on and God bless...

Dangit, I knew my momma was right when she said to wash it after each use
On a more serious note, if I put the rear-end outside, will the smell go away eventually?

Gear oil has large amount's of sulfur(rotten eggs smell) which prevent's micro welding the gear teeth so they last longer. Enough heat can build between rubbing teeth under load the metal can melt and resolidify many times. Also the biggest cause for pitting.

To answer your rear end question, No, the oil soaks into the metal between other molecules and it'll be there for...maybe forever. If you wash it well enough to rebuild it, like acid dipping, or other caustic means, you can drasticly reduce the smell but it'll never go away completely. Making sure it has good gasket's and seals will help.

If it dropped oil, just use Brake Kleen on the spot. No oil, no smell.

And wipe your rear end REEEEEAAAAALLLL Good from now on!
