gas gauge 89 ford f250

gas gauge reads way past full, when u turn on the key. what is causing this has two tanks

The wire to the sending unit shorted to ground will do that.

I got that symptom on one tank when an installer accidentally caught one of the sending unit wires between the frame and a trailer hitch he was bolting on.

If it is one of the individual tank wires, you should only get the problem on one tank or the other. If you get it on both tanks, the wire is grounded before it connects to the solenoid. That means its probably the wiring that runs from the dash to the solenoid under the truck.
