Here's how to locate and communicate with members of the automotive aftermarket marketing community so that we can respectfully let them know what's going on here.

First, I just typed "automotive marketing" into Google. The first link points to a list of websites that are involved in automotive marketing: list of automotive marketing sites . Not bad, 51 sites are listed. The 5th site immediately catches my eye: Advanced Digital Strategies, LLC. Their description is: "Information source for the automotive aftermarket, specializing in marketing and technology topics."

These words catch my eye: digital, information, aftermarket, marketing, technology. They sound like a web-savvy company. They'll probably have a good background understanding of this situation. Plus, I can see that they specialize in the aftermarket, which is largely what covers the hotrodding industry (as opposed to say, marketers who work for new car dealers, etc.).

I visit their site. Looks good. Information-based, lots of articles. They mention concepts such as data mining and search engine optimization. And, they even have forums. Low-volume, but it shows that they are most probably not just tech-savvy, but familiar with online culture. Then, I check out their "About Us" page: About Advanced Digital Strategies, LLC . Experience with websites, tech knowledge, years in the aftermarket industry. Perfect.

I click the "Contact Us" link, and look at the first entry. There are some website and marketing association names that I recognize. Time to email him. The text of the email is below, followed by commentary:



Some notes:

• First I introduce myself, and state my position and my affiliation.
• Next, I demonstrate that I've taken the time to visit his site (not just the main page either). He knows I'm not a spammer, sending out the same message to millions of people.
• Next, I get right to the point. I tell him why I'm writing to him, without trying to beat around the bush.
• I don't make an accusation, I give an opinion. I say that "we feel" that the marketing tactics were manipulative and unethical.
• I give some quick examples, being sure to name Gas Monkey Garage and Richard Rawlings.
• I give two quick links to some of the best parody pics. Note how I've set up short redirect links. This is so that the links won't break in the email, because they're too long.
• I give the link to the full discussion.
• Thank him, and I'm done. Move down the list to the next site that catches my eye. When that list is done, back to Google to find more listings.

Bear in mind that these people probably won't post in this thread (a wise move, from their perspective). However, they're the ones you see as the numerous anonymous "guests" browsing this thread.

Let's keep this within our standard board guidelines (I just had to split a post out to the Dump). Believe me, I know the temptation is there. However, we lose our sharp wit when we degrade to potty humor and blatant "gay jokes". I know the original promotional material has some disturbing homo-erotic undertones, but keep in mind that there are no doubt many homosexuals who are legitimately offended by their lifestyle being portrayed by Richard Rawlings.

WakBordr7387 -- good to see you in here. Nice first submission. BTW, if you missed this thread, then clearly it hasn't been sufficiently publicized. My error. I'll do some more work posting it in the board header, and on other parts of the site. It looks like we now have enough material to set up a dedicated gallery page with our wonderful parodies, and a summary of this fiasco. Also, nice work on the forethought regarding posting the pic on the net. Fortunately, there is a place on the net for every type of picture. Pass it around as much as you can, but pass it differently as each situation requires. I recently had a member PM me a parody pic for approval before posting it on this board. It was not within the limits of our posting guidelines, but I might have him contact you for a more appropriate place to post it.

I'll take care of that tomorrow though. I've been busy playing with video editing software all day .
