gas peddle spring

I have a 1966 ford mustang with the 6 cylinder 200 cid engine. I have a somewhat simple question to ask.
I need to know where the gas peddle return spring goes so as to provide the proper tension to the gas peddle. Right now it is connected to the linkage on the one end and to a bracket on the exhaust manifold below the linkage on the other end. Somehow I dont believe it is suppost to be connected to the exhaust manifold located just below the linkage. I would think the spring should be pulled forward towards the front of the engine rather than down toward the ground.

Can anyone help me with this. I have an assortment of new springs, just dont know where to mount it.

Tnx Irwin

Why not build a bracket, attach it with the intake bolts?
