Gas tank for 31 ford coupe

When I bought my project 31 ford coupe the gas tank was in the trunk. It was leaking and I removed it. As I am now rebuilding the car I was going to add a 32 tank because I think it looks good. It is expensive however so I am thinking of the trunk mount again. I feel I must put a steel firewall between the seat and the tank. Any opinions about this? Thanks Les

Gas tank for a 31 Ford

Use a search engine on the web or go to Ebay. I needed one for a '32 Chevy and found it that way. I had a choice between new stainless or refinished original. I took the stainless.

Tanks, Inc have a 'universal' tanks that can be used:

And yes, a good firewall is a must, IMO

As far as doing a '32 mod - not a job for the faint of heart even using the Dagle 'kit' (http://www.dagelsstreetrods.com/gas%20tank%20kits.htm)

This is mine - upside down after cleaning up my welds:

During assembly:

Assembled

And no, I did not use the Dagel kit but did my own engineering and design as I felt the kit compromised some strength. Total cost: tank, frame horns and covers, spreader bar, steel - about $550.

Thanks Dave great pictures and wonderful information. Do you have a firewall behind your seat into the trunk? I think a steel floor in the car will act as that? Les

Les - the firewall is the trunk floor, which in this case is an almost flat piece of steel rather then a rumble seat riser. I figured the tank in the rear ala '32 was better then 10 gallons in your lap as the 'A' came with and 10-15 in the trunk using what little room was there after I installed a battery. But, like I said - it is a lot of work especially if the body is on the chassis.

As far as a firewall, I have the upholstered wrap around inner panel in the pass. compartment and another in the trunk. The space between is my wiring module along with a bunch of reinforcing steel:

The upholstered trunk lid panel has been removed for repairs - if the upholsterer ever gets to them . If not, I'll do them myself
