Gas tank relocation, dumb idea?

I ditched the side tank on my '87 Chevy SWB 2wd. I was planning on building an aluminum tank to fit where my spare goes. (Like a blazer tank I guess...) Problem 1; Where do I put the spare? Problem 2; I have to run the exhausts out the side. I wanted them straight back.

My reasons? Put more weight behind the axle for better launches and I didn't care for the documentary that showed side impact - tank rupture fires....nice.

I don't mind the fab work on the tank build, but where do I put the spare? I'm starting to rethink this idea. What do you guys think? This is going to be a general purpose ride...go, show, tow....

Could mount the tire under the gas tank, or mount it where the old tank was, or dont carry a spare. Sounds like alot of work for probably little gains in launching times. A nice set of M/T tires would probably be quicker and cheaper.

Rear Tank

Ford..about 1996 had dual tanks on their short wheebse P/U I know I have one..maybe one of those tanks would work..Still room for the spare under the tank...Only about 15/18 gals tho..

I have tried most all of it and now do what is known to work..
