gas tanks

Somewhere I was reading a thread on gas tanks. I know the Dutchman put up a site and I called it I think it was Mikes Street Rods. anyways they have polypropalene tanks. Someone told me 38 Dodge and 38 DeSotos would take the same tank. Just to be sure I asked them about size and it sounded right but I asked which side the filler was on they said the passenger side> The 38 DeSoto is on the drivers side. Then I got to thinking later if you turn the tank around it would be on the drivers side. But would it be near the front of the tank or the rear. Mine is near the rear. The filler goes through the rear fender. Does anyone have a 38 Dodge or Plymouth that has the original tank so they can give me some info?

re: gas tanks

I know on a 39 dodge the filler neck is in the rear of the fender on the drivers side & if you turned it 180 it would come out the front and every 38 I have seen in pictures shows the tank on the drivers side also.......joe

Try George Taylor in Pasadena TX PH 713-472-5886. If he doesn't have a new one he can tell you who does.

re: gas tanks

Thanks Pasadena. I may try that. Dutch I tried sir Michaels and they had tanks at a reasonable price. The lady acted like she hardly wanted to talk/sell me anything. I needed a little help and she was in a hurry to hang up. I did find out that 36 thru 38 Dodge /plymouth take the same tank but she said the filler was on the passenger side. I need it on the drivers side. Maybe it would work if I turned it around, I don't know cause I didn't have anything to look at. I'm still looking.

re: gas tanks

If all else fails in finding the correct tank and assumeing your body work is not done. You could switch your fuel tank door to the other fender.

Just a thought.

re: gas tanks

Thanks Rodder, Was talking with Ian about that and he had the same suggestion. I didn't want to go to the extra mile of cutting and welding what didn't need to be done but that is a very viable option. I will keep it in mind if all else fails. I prefer top keep it on the drivers side for ease of filling the tank without going to the opposite side of the car. Must be a middle aged thing.

re: gas tanks

38 Special,

Try this place, they have all the stuff for the tank, not sure if they have that. They may know where to purchase a tank.

re: gas tanks

Finally ordered a tank from Sir Michaels. Got very friendly service and help this time. I must have caught them at a bad moment the last time. 37, 38 , 39 Dodge are the same tank 35 and 36 have the filler on top instead of on the side. Can't wait to get it. They're sending it out tomarrow. Still might get the body on this month.

re: gas tanks

Finally got the tank and put it on. The 37-39 Dodge tank fits just fine. With a little shimming I can even use the original tank straps (which I wanted to do since I had them already painted and ready). It even comes out on the drivers side so I don't have to go around to the other side of the car ro fill it up ,Ian. Thanks for the help Dutch/guys. Now onto the next step/problem.
