Gas trimmer smoking on startup

So I have this Troy bilt trimmer for 7 years now and its been smoking at startup, Otherwise it runs great, just did valve adjustment. It's 4 cycle so I don't mix oil with gas. I do run 10w30 oil in it, recommended is 30w non detergent. Would this cause it to smoke at startup?

If you store it with the crankcase facing down, does it still smoke?

down, always down.

Yep, common issue indeed. Most smoke a little anyway because the valve seals wear down after a few years and start leaking, just like an old car. They sit overnight, what little oil is left in the rocker box bleeds into the cylinder, lo and behold, smokes on startup. I wouldn't worry too much, unless it smokes like a mosquito sprayer.

Right...he's had this one for 7 years now, so the seals will be quite hard and inflexible.

Trouble is with most of these seasonal type tools is that they just don't get used often enough.

I store it with engine upside. I might switch to straigh W30 and see if that helps it.
