looking for an answer to my problem. I need a gasket material that will not break down to gas. specifically I have made a custom fit application to my gas tank that converts a GM fuel sending unit to my ford tank. I purchased S.W. gauges that came with a sending unit, no one makes a sending unit that makes the conversion. I need a gasket solution for my app. Looking forward to some help. Thanks.
What I did was make a plate out of 1/4" aluminum to cover the old hole then attached the new sending unit to the plate. I need a sealant or gasket to make the connection from the plate to the tank.
They have some cement ( glue) at Walmart called Seal All.....it is resistant to gasoline. I did practically the same thing you are doing and I made my own gasket out of gasket paper and I put the Seal All on both sides....I have not had any problems.
If that doesn't look like what you want, try the fairly new Permatex Hylomar sealant. I used it on the sending unit in my boat tank and it's holding so far.....
Permatex #2 (non-hardening) is compatible with gasoline, and has a peanut-buttery consistency in the tube. It dries to a semi-soft substance that can be nicked by a fingernail if you're real careful. If you're dealing with a fairly flat surface, get a sheet of gasket material from a parts store and cut it to fit, then use #2 on both sides. It cleans up easily with alcohol.
