Gasser Racing Series at Empire Dragway 7/21 (TONS OF PICS!!)

I figured you guys would like some of these shots. I took them with a Nikon D40x with the kit lens. I shot most of the action shots at the 60-ft mark where there is a break in the guardrail. This series is pretty darn big around here. They do 1/8th mile only.

Nice shooting joelster! I had to look up the camera specs. The Focus Tracking feature seems to work really well!

I don't use any fancy settings on the camera. I shoot shutter priority. I shot the action shots at 1/125th sec. I let the camera pic the aperture and iso. The key to shooting the action shots is to FOLLOW the car through the shot. I swivel around from right to left and as the car is at the middle I depress the button. You never stop the camera until after the shot is taken. It takes a little bit of practice. The slower the shutter speed, the more blur the background will have, but then the car can get fuzzy if you shoot too slow, like 1/60th. If I shoot at too fast of a shutter speed the background won't have any blur, and you'll lose the sense of motion in the shot, like at 1/500th.

Interesting. I thought the Focus Tracking was an automatic feature.

I've always shot in manual mode. Never thought of trying shutter priority. Gonna have to try the next time at the track. Thanks!
