Are you talking ammeter or voltmeter?

A voltmeter can be hooked up to any positive source. That one on the alternator would be a good one. It would then show how many volts you alternator is putting out.

An ammeter has to be placed inline on the circuit. In other words, a wire has to come to the gauge, through it and back to the source.
