gear ratios in a 4x4 front vs. rear....

so... I'd always thought the front and rear differentials had to be the same gear ratio. I've discovered i have a dana 44 front with 4.10's, and a danged chrysler rear with 3.55's.... and it was the rear that was smoked. not that i didn't discover that until after i replaced the front carrier bearings.... so, does the gear ratio need to match?

yes, they need to match, unless your runnin big mud then sometimes guys run a taller gear up front to spin faster keepin the front up.

Somebody has obviouslly changed either the fronts or rears....

They need to be the same. Usually, the front is slightly shorter, so that it pulls away a slight bit from the rear, so they don't bind........like 4.10 front and 4.11 rear.

If the ratios arent the same, then both sets of wheels will spin at different speeds. Which will cause damage like you mentioned.
