i have a 73 nova i want to put new rear end gears in it. i drive it on the road alot so can't go to low. it has a 35 turbo tranny 327 motor and 26 inch tires. i was thinking 3.73 gears i think it has stock 2.73 gears how much will this new 3.73 help me. any suggestion?

You should find out for sure what gear you have now. If it's a non posi, jack up one rear wheel. Put a mark on thr driveshaft and tire, the spin the wheel exactly 2 full turns. If it really is a 2.73, the shaft will turn 2 and 3/4 turns.

Then figure out what what driving you are doing. Mostly highway with everybody doing 70+ and your motor will be buzzing pretty high with 3.73, especially with a non-lockup auto. Lower 3's would be better IMO

Got 2.73's? Drive around in 2nd gear some, then do the math and realize that you're mimicking 4.10 gears. Knock off about 10% of engine speed, and that's what 3.73's will be like.

But the kick in the pants you'll get just might be worth it.

Of course you might want to stick a posi unit in there while it's apart, if it doesn't have one already. It'll only cost you for the part, since the same labor has to be done when you change gears.
