General Engine Advice Needed

This question isn't about a hotrod, it's about a mid 80's buick century with a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine. Here's the problem, the car won't turn over. It's not the battery because I've tried two different fully charged batteries.

Here's what's baffling me and have me worried, if you turn the key over long enough it'll turn over a few times before like grinding to a stop. With the Starter smoking and a bad burning smell. I've never thrown a rod so I don't know if that's the proble and can't think of any other problems. Any help or light shed on the situation would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Were you driving the car every day when this happened. Did you drive it to a location and shut the engine off and came out for the next start up and have this problem or did something bring the no crank condition on?

Steve

The actually died and was towed back. But then it was just turning over without starting. I checked the fire and it didnt have any coming out of any of the plugs so I was planning on checking the distributor.

Anyway yesterday I tried to turn it over again just for the hell of it was turning over weak. I had a charged Diehard Gold so I took the battery off and tried the Diehard Gold. It was doing the samething. So I put the battery on the charger and tried it again later and it was the same problem until it stopped and wouldn't turn over at all. I held the key over despite nothing happening though and it turned over weakly a few times and that's when I smelled metal burning and noticed the smoke coming off thee starter. I'm totally baffled by this lol.

Did you crank it over for a long period of time? If so you may have cashed out the starter motor. Can you put a socket and ratchet on the crank shaft center bolt and turn the engine over that way?

Thanks, that was just the simple thing I was looking for when I posted. It's one of those things that you know you should think of but for whatever reason you just can't. Thanks again, I'll check it out and see if that's the problem because I was turning it over a lot, changing the plugs, plug wires, etc.
