General engine/drivetrain thoughts...

Say you are building a rod of some sort. Say you are working wth a budget. (that's pretty much everyone here right?)

Well, here's a thought I have had recently: Why rebuild that engine from the donor car? I know there are a lot of good reasons to rebuild it, but there are a lot of good reasons not to rebuild it too.

If you are looking for serious performance, then you'll have to rebuild, but if you are building cruiser, why bother?

Say your sbc 350 is coming out of a 100,000 mile Caprice. It runs strong, doesn't smoke, and has good compression, and passes emissions. That is a motor that will probably last at least another 50,000 if not more. So, paint it, put a new intake and some valve covers on it, and slap it in the sweet cruiser. Most cruisers are pretty light anyway, so it should run out pretty well.

Do any of you do this? Or is a crate motor or performance rebuild a must for your tastes?

Well I certainly would agree to doing it the way you propose..there is really no need in my mind to do a build on a motor unless the one you have is either toast or you really have a need for something different for competition purpose..

I have tried most all of it and now do what is known to work..

The only problem with your scenario is that the engine will have to come out again later for a rebuild. If it's really in good shape though, I'd run it for a while then buy another cheap rebuilder and take my time building. EFI engines usually last much longer due to less trash in the oil and better fuel delivery. If it were a carbed engine with 100K I'd go ahead and refresh the thing.
