General Engine Question: Camshafts and Valvetrain

Hi All,

I have been working on gaining a better understanding of how an engine breathes. Got a bit of a non-technical thought on camshafts and valve-trains and wanted to get everyone's take on it.

Can a camshaft and the valve train be likened to a human respiratory system, in that the camshaft controls the breathing much like the central respiratory control system, and the valves work in the same way as lungs?

Thanks

I don't think that is a good analogy. If anything, the cylinder would be the lungs and the heads/intake would be the trachea. The valves would be the epiglotis.

The pistons moving in the cylinders would be like the lungs, carb would be like the nose, intake manifold would be like the esophagus, and i dont think the valves would correspond to anything
