Check to make sure that the wires that you removed from the generator are not shorting out against one another. Also did you put on a one wire alternator or did you try to wire it back in thru the regulator. BTW if you get a chance post a few pics of your '62.

My son's 57 BelAir has a 327, 350 Turbo, 74 Nova rear. The generator had been replaced by an alternator and went bad. The "tell-tale" light for the generator never had worked. After I replaced the alternator, I tracked down the proper wire, ashcanned some of the old generator harness no longer in use, and got it to function properly.
The light should come on when the key is in the "on" position, and go out after the engine is started and the alternator begins to produce juice. During your conversion you may have reversed a connection which affects this light. Recheck the wiring harness for the alternator conversion and you'll probably catch the error. Use a schematic for your car as a guide.
Bets of luck.

I found the problem ,it was in the stock voltage regulator . The clearence on the 12 volt contact where to close .When I turn the car off, the regulator contact stayed closed and back feed 12 volts through the alternater field wire . That was what was keeping the light on . I bent the stopper arm out alittle to increace the gap and the problem was fixed . Thanks for all the help, I will post a picture of my impala when it stops snowing . Thank John
