Angry Generator vs. Alternator

I've got a 55 Ford Customline with a 272 that was originally a 6v. When I bought it, it had an aftermarket 12v. Alt. installed. The belts don't seem to line up very well and my Gen light, obviously, is always on. Anyone know of a place that sells 12v. Gen's or Alt's that fit the 272? I'd appreciate any advice at all. I've thought about just buying a remanufactured 6v. Gen. but I want to be able to install a decent stereo system...would that still be possible? <img src="graemlins/drunk.gif" border="0" alt="[drunk]" />

On a '57 Ford with a 272 V8 I installed a single wire GM 65 amp. alternator in the original Ford generator location. It required a small spacer to line up the belts on the main hanger and I used an oversized nut (about 1/2" I think). For the adjustment I used a turn buckle. The turn buckle worked great for adjusting and the car was my daily driver for years.

I know I had a 12v system to start with but the mounting will be the same. Don't go back to the generator setup. I remember I started out that way. I had installed an ammeter and you could see that old regulator pulsing and the generator just couldn't put out the poop. ...and besides, think about the weight loss without that regulator?
