GERD sufferer's

Anyone with GERD, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease? it sucks bad. I haven't eaten well in a month and two weeks. I've lost 35 pounds. Everything I eat makes me sick to my stomach. I'm on Nexium twice daily and as many antacids I can choke down.

What helps you?

re: GERD sufferer's

That reaks!
I was on Nexium for a while to, but mine was all nerves.
Sounds crazy, but if the heartburn gets to killin ya. Take a small spoon of baking soda and mix with like 6-8 oz of water and drink it.
Kills heartburn and makes ya belch till ya feel like heaven. HG

Johnsongrass,

That doesn't sound good at all. Sure hope you get it under control. Try Metamucel if you haven't already. Works wonders for me (after a number of prescription drugs failed.)

re: GERD sufferer's

I have GERD also. My doc put me on Prevacid, 30 MG a day (one pill). I take a pill every 2 or 3 days (make the bottle last longer) and I have very few problems.

re: GERD sufferer's

Just a mod on HG's homemade recipe,

When I get heartburn:
In a tall glass,

one ounce or so of vinegar, add water to halfway, heaping teaspoon of baking soda and stir in

Drink while it bubbles up,

Belch like hell

Works on indigestion too.

Have you tried Xantac75 ?

re: GERD sufferer's

I've found for me, the over the counter Prilosec works better than the nexium or the prevacid.

Walmart has a good generic brand of Metamucil, been taking it for about 6 years, good for you and helps keep the weight down a bit. Dan

re: GERD sufferer's

I'll try anything at this point. My doc doesn't seem to worried about my weight loss. He say's it good for me. I don't agree that malnutrition in the best way to lose weight. I'm looking for a new doc now. But my options are pretty limited by insurance. Anyone know what the expected recovery time is? I still can't eat anything. Although I don't feel sick to the stomach anymore. It's changed to a thousand ant's biting the inside of my stomach and esophagus. I've heard some people never recover completely. I'd rather die I think.

re: GERD sufferer's

My doctor in Houston had me on zantac 150. When I moved to Baton Rouge, the doctor here put me on protonix.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw zantac 150 at Sam's. As my insurance does not cover protonix too well, and the zantacs worked just fine, I have been happily back on zantac 150 for 2 weeks. It is less than 1/2 the price.

re: GERD sufferer's

Taking TOO much antacid can give you a "rebound effect". Your body will start producing MORE acid to offset the antacids.

Sounds like your "flora" or body chemistry is AFU. The Gremmie Glass sounds like a good deal. Personally, I would TRY some of those PH strips that you pee on, to determine your body PH. (Like the Atkins dieters) If it looks low (acid) then keep up the baking soda.
In the mean time, stay away from Soda, fats, potatoes, tomatoes, citrus fruits (and OJ), and anything greasy/oily like fries, chips, etc. Eat easily digestable stuff like plain rice (no butter!, instead of water, use chicken broth) chicken. You have to stay away from Fats and acidic stuff for a while.

Your stomach is creating excess acids to disolve the "hard to digest" foods. Drink TONS of water.

And, yes, I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, last night...
