getting eng. all adj. after cam break-in

All is back together after FINALLY getting rockers adj.and breaking-in e/b 2157 cam kit , I added a performer int. and q/jet #17080272 to my 76 f/bird 350 also. The carb came off a 301 80 f/bird and it ran on that car before removal. I had it stored in my cabinet for a year to keep it clean . It's running rich and was hard to get the idle right . should I try some carb cleaner through it ? I'm sure it's going to need a rebuild ! Thanks !!

What jets are in it now?
Have you verified the float level?
What PowerPiston spring is installed?
How many turns on the APT screw?
How many turns on the mixture screws? Did you set them using the idle drop method?
Have you verified the choke is fully opening when warm?

What is your ignition timing?

The factory jetting for some of the 170802xx carbs are as follows (sorry I don't have any info on the 17080272, but these are a good starting point). If you have the regular hot rod setup (intake, headers, etc) then you would want 1 or 2 sizes larger on the primary jet.

Carb..........Pri jet........Pri Rod...............Sec Rod
17080201...71.............48.....................D R
17080202...71.............42.....................C H
17080204...71.............42.....................C H
17080205...72.............51.....................D P
17080206...72.............51.....................D P
17080207...71.............42.....................C H
17080212...72.............52.....................?
17080213...72.............50.....................D P
17080215...72.............50.....................D P
17080224...72.............48.....................D R

I didn't take it apart as I wanted to get the cam broke-in and get it running as best I could for now . I don't think it has the apt adj. and it has an elect. choke (working ) The timing is set at 16 btc. per data on sticker under hood , but it has set for along time so I'll run it to finish the next 100 mi. brk in and see how it runs after I drive it a little .

If it's running rich the next 100 miles could spell "DOOM" for your rings and bearings.

Fuel wash! REmoves (cleans) oil off your cylinder walls and then fuel mixes with your oil. Super thin. No viscosity. No cooling or lube for the bearings. Spun bearings possible.
DOOM!!
Wallet cleaning time!!
New motor!!
AAARGH!!!
Been there, done that!!

I don't think it's that rich ,The exhaust is kind of xtra strong smelling . It doesn't have black smoke rolling out .The q/jet has been sitting for a long time and it's going to need readjustment as I run it for a little . I'm working on possibly rebuilding it very soon or find a carb reasonably priced . I know what your saying about the thinning of oil and such ,(DOOM) for sure !!!
