Ghost Flames Plan of Attack

After much research and help from this Site I think I finally have a plan for the amateur ghost flames project of the year:

1. HOK Orange Metallic Base over all
2. HOK Apple Candy over orange base over all
3. HOK Clear over all
4. 1500 wet sand over all
5. Tape flames outline with 1/8" 3M vinyl and mask all but flames.
6. Blue pearl mixed w/ HOK clear at 1 tsp/qt to start.
7. Airbrush pearl-clear around outline of licks
8. Remove masking.
9. Clear over all
10. Wet sand and buff.

The effect I want is a bright red candy overall with deeper red candy edges to the licks of the flames that appear and disappear with the changes in light.

Anybody think that's what I'm gonna get with this plan?

Your plan is a good one and will work out nice. The clear will give you a safe substrate to mask your flames and design on.

**The challenge will be to resist the temtation to put so much pearl on.**

An experiment I would like to try someday would be to mask a car nice tight and clean for flames and then turn the air way up and fog the booth up with pearl in the air. Let that settle down and then pull the mask and clear from there. The pearl is always so powerful the overspray alone would affect a true ghost flame ya know.

.you can do it

I'll keep you posted

When I get done with the first trial, I'll post the pix.

Thanks for the advice on less is more. I'm always tempted to shoot too heavy, but learned from 2-staging that less is usually enuf.

Might want to consider some SG-100 for the pearl.
Shooting clear thru an AB is gonna be tough.
The SG will be like a base paint and shoot MUCH better IMO.
What AB you gonna use?
Sure, You can reduce the clear but you really don't need a catylized product at that stage. The SG will be easier to "errase" if you need as well.
Not sure myself what the Blue pearl will end up looking like over that base/kandy.
I'd do a test panel first and SEE if that is what you want. Yeah, I know it's a PIA but so is having something shot on a vehicle that you don't like.

Ab

AB is a Badger 150-4.

What is the downside to shooting too much pearl?

I will try the SG for the interclear.

You SEE it. LOL...
Pearl is always going to be a hidden effect so to speak and unless the Sun is on it,It will be a vague effect.Kinda like a small metallic if too much. I used a green mica in the first coat of clear over a metallic blue and the only time you could see it was in the sun and it only "caught" an edge which gave this greenish glow off it.Really cool IMO and the owner thought it was great.
This is why we suggest a test panel and use a good light when shooting so's you can get a good reflection to judge how heavy it's going on.
The key is to get the edges of the flames fairly rich as they are the defining part of the lay out and just fog the center's lightly for some "body".

Milo are the pro's on this and I'd get their advice as well.
I'm just a hobby painter who plays with fire.

This is an AB practice piece that I threw some ghost's on for fun and I had this mixed HEAVY with gold pearl and applied with the AB to give you some idea of a lot of pearl over a light base which is a Tangerine Kandy over Silver.
