glass fuel filter half full of half empty.
 

My 65 ElCamino normally starts fast, even after sitting for weeks. Recently
it needed to be turned over for 20 seconds or so before it would start. I payed closer attention and observed that the clear fuel filter bowl would be empty after it sat long enough for the problem to occur. I concluded that the fuel pump must have ben leaking back and draining the clear filter bowl.
I replaced the pump and started the car. I watched as it idles and noticed that the filter was only half full or empty. Seems that the clear filter bowl would be full with the engine only idling. I am wrong?

I would suggest removing said filter, clean it thouroughly, while u have it off remove the fuel line from the manual pump that leads to the tank take the gas cap off and use a small amount of compressed air and blow through the line there may be sediment clogging the line in the tank reinstall and see if that fixes things, that would be the first step i would take jope that helps

I believe you are wrong and that is not a symptom of the real problem. An inline plastic filter will be only partially full (maybe 1/4 or 1/3) while the car runs. A glass bowl may be similar.

The problem - if there is one - may be in the carburetor.
