Hi everyone. I have a buddy who races a stock car at the local track. He runs in the Hobby stock class basically meaning the motor is mostly stock other than a big cam. Its a 350, smogger heads, two barrel intake, 2 barrel Rochester carb, stock exhaust manifolds, etc. I dont know the specs on the cam but its relatively big. The problem he is having is the exhaust manifolds are glowing red hot. Also, his temp gauge was reading close to 240 degrees. Hope he didnt crack a head. I am guessing this is being caused by a lean condition. What is the best way to set the mixture on a race car like this. Set the mixture screws according to a vacuum gauge? Also, I dont know what he has his timing set at. What would work best for this application? 12 initial and 36 total? Other than a lean condition and timing, what else could be causing this problem? Any tricks to get a little more performance out of this thing? Thanx alot for any input.
