You need a 26 spline 3 series Eaton Posi or Yukon Dura Grip, 3.73 gears and a good installation kit. I recommend getting the parts from DTS, Randy's Ring & Pinion or Tom's Differentials. prostreet6t9 is a member of this board and he can also get the parts for you.

Don't be tempted to use cheap parts. The Auburn is cheaper than the Eaton and Dura Grip, but don't use it. Also, Summit and Jeg's have cheaper installation kits and bargan brand gears, but don't go that way. Get good parts the first time and you will be much happier with the results.

Check post number 2 for the places to purchase parts. These are people that I have delt with in the past and I trust them. Tell them what you have and they will help you with the correct parts. Your '81 will have 26 spline axles, so you will need a Eaton or Dura Grip with 26 splines. You will also need a 3 series for the standard 3.73 gears. The installation kits with Timken bearings and the super shim set are best. Stay away from Ratech kits and differential shims and Auburn differentials.

If you wanted to upgrade this rear end to 28 spline axles now would be the time to do it. Chances are your axles are worn where the bearings run on them and need to be replaced anyway, so upgrading to 28 spline parts will not cost anymore than replacing the 26 spline parts.

H-Body/3rd Gen F-Body Posi Interchangeability Question

I bought a 7.5 posi for my Monza years ago. It came off another Monza. Will it fit into the rear end of my 3rd gen Firebird?

depends what 's under your 3rd gen
holden 9 bolt
10 bolt 7.5"
10bolt 7.62"

to the o/p the 2.8v6 s-10 blazers are mostly 3.73 geared posi
same with the 86 up monty SS/cutlass/etc
some s-10 p/u
the later s-10 based blazers and clones might have 3.73 but you'll have to check if they are the 7.62" ring gear.. and I'm not 100% sure if they are a drop in..
if you're into the junkyard crawl ..

7.5 and 7,62 gears do interchange. I've done that swap many times. I think all of the after market gears for the 7.5 are now actually 7.62 gears.

The only thing about the Monza rear end that I'm not sure of is the axle splines. I haven't been in one of the Vega/Monza 7.5 rear ends, so I can't say if the parts will swap or not.

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen!

They give me some hope. Now I don't feel too averse to dropping my axle housing and checking if the thing actually fits.
