GM 10 Bolt Identification

I just purchased a 10 Bolt rear end for my 71 El Camino. It is a 10 bolt open with 2.73 gears. Looks to be all factory original never disassembled.

The center casting number is 3969277 which an internet search indicates is from a 70 to 72 A Body.

The only markings on the axle tube I can find are on the passengers side about 5 inches from the center casting - marking is 4EK053

That code doesnt seem to match with any info I could find for 10 bolt rear ends.

I beleive this is an 8.2 but not sure - how can I tell ?

Does anyone have ny info on what the 4EK053 code means ?

thanks Gary

This part will tell you if it's a 8.2 or 8.5. I'm guessing that it might be the 8.5 from a Cutlass or a Skylark. Also check to see if it has c clip axles or if they are retained by press on axle bearings. the 8.2 has c clip axles and the A body 8.5 does not.

The rear end has C Clips so I assume it is an 8.2 from what you said above.

thanks for the info

I still not sure what the $EK053 code on the axle means - it doesnt seem to match any codes I can find on any of the sites - and there are no other markings on either axle tube.

Appreciate if anybody has any info on this code.
