gm 3800 series 2 nightmare

I am at an end. I had a hesitation in this engine then it hydrolocked. aquired a long block and assembled it whith all new sensors except cam and crank. I still had a hesitation. found a small vacum leak at the trottle body. Still had problem. now it has stopped idleing and sounds like loss all vacum. Do i just junk this and car? I had 19hg vacumm. It has new plugs, wires, fuel pump, filter, presure sensor iginition coils and controller, complete exhaust. New upper intake with new lower and upper caskets, pcv valve. All that is left is the ecm and prom. does any body have ideas?

The first thing I would do is have the ECM checked. Usually if the ECM goes bad it will cut off and will not restart.

Check the throttle position sensor and idle control motor.

I dont see how a bad ECM will cause a loss of vacuum here. Makes no sense.
You need to do a few basic tests here as the info you are providing is ambiguous at best.
First perform a compression test
do it dry, then do a wet test if any cylinders are low.
Then check for spark, and check fuel pressure, then check injector pulse.
Engines need compression, fuel and spark to run. You need to start at the basics.

First of all, a complaint about a 3.8 series II seems very rare. I have 2 of them, and have had very few problems.

98 Grand Prix GTP
04 Grand Prix GT
(Yep both even the same color!)

The 98 GTP had a start / stall (will NOT run) conditon that turned out to be a ceramic resistor down low in the engine bay (RH side front, IIRC?) that controls the fuel pump. It apparently increases fuel delivery under boost.

The 04 GT had a start / stall (it would run after cracking the throttle) thing going on, but it is not supercharged. A can of CRC brand MAF Sensor Cleaner, followed by a can of Throttle Body Cleaner fixed that right up.

Secondly, I do understand the Hotrodder / DIY aspect of self-diagnosis and repair ... but sometimes it becomes a "throw parts at it until it runs" scenario, which is occasionally more expensive than throwing in the towel and taking it to a pro.

Do you have a code-reader?
Any stored codes?

gm 3800 series 2 nightmare

thanks for all the replies. i will re state all that has been done to this 1995 olds 98.
1) the orignal engine hydrolocked due to the egr condition. engine did not freeze. changed upper and lower gaskets and replaced the plenum. the engine started and ran with a hesition for about 2omin. then it sounded like it lost the rods. i decided to replace with a used engine 2002 with 55k miles. thransfered all sensors.
2) it has a new fuel pump ,filter and regulator. fuel tank flushed.
3) new air sensor
4)cleaned maf sensor
5)replaced air temp sensor
6)new tps sensor
7)new pcv
8)cleaned injectors
9)new temp sensor
10)orignal crank and cam sensors from donor engine
11)changed to orginal knock sensors
12)engine vacumm at idle is 20 hg- drops to 10 when opened hard.
13)all vacuum lines have been replaced and carbon canister puge valve and filter changed
14)plugs,wires,changed but not coil packs nor inginition module
15)orginal o2 sensor
16)orignal ecm and prom
19)fuel pressure 45 pounds
with all said, when running engine above 2k it eacts as if there is a rev limiter
17)new cataltic converter
18)orginal oil pressure sensor.

this is why it is a nightmare

Hey Newb ...
I know you're new here and have only 12 posts.
The problem is that many of them are only one minute apart!

IMO, this site is not designed for "instant gratification" or "silver bullet" answers.

Be patient, and continue to post what you HAVE tried, any differences after swapping out another component, and provide as many details as to the symptoms as you can.

I'm not a mechanic by trade, but that OBD1 / OBD2 ECM swap raises a flag for me.

There can be significant differences between ECM's on two very similar cars (Same make, model, year, etc) let alone two entirely different systems.

Just my $0.02 worth ...

Edit:
Re-read, and was (still am) confused a little by the OBD1/OBD2 stuff.
IIRC, 1996 was the first year of OBD2, and part of the reason for this upgrade was to outfit every car with the same common connector, so that all code readers would work on all makes and models.

If your car is a 1995, and the "parts store" code readers don't connect to the port ... I'd have to say that your car is NOT wired for OBD2. Right?
If I read you correctly, you said that you swapped ALL of the sensors, etc over from the original engine. Any NEW components you added were also ordered for the 1995 application?

Please clarify / confirm.
