GM 8.5 10 Bolt for Drag Racing.

Trying to set-up a 8.5 GM bolt for drag racing, 4.56 gears, 33 spline axles and spool. I have always shimmed the pinion depth to what is written on the back of the pinion gear to the center of the caps. In speaking with my machinst he said I also have to compensate for the "Error in the Cap". Anyone know the best way to measure this? Or should I set it up and run the pattern and get the right backlash and call it good?

No matter what the number is, the only thing that matters is the pattern.

Some depth tools measure from the bearing cap split face rather than from the center of the bearing bores. The caps are not necessarily split exactly in the middle so accounting for that offset would be required.

I spot welded around the axle tubes until I had a complete weld letting cool between welding. That probably moved everything around even more. I will run the pattern and see what I get.
