GM 8.5 8.6 interchange

I have a 1980 Chevy 10 bolt 8.5 posi rear in a truck.I have been told the later 2000 and up 8.6 ring and pinion will bolt right in using standard 8.5 carrier and bearings. Is this correct?

Year 2000 axles had a first and second design carrier bearing. The 1st design is the same as 99back and will work in your housing. The 2nd design uses a larger OD carrier bearing and will not work without changing the carrier bearing.

The gear set interchanges in all years as long as your truck has a carrier for a 2.73 and numerically higher app.

What is the largest series gear the original 2.73 8.5" rear carrier can take?

Why are you going to a 2000+ 8.6 ?

The 3 series carrier will take clear up to the deepest gear available - 5.57 IIRC, there is no 4 series carrier for the 8.5/8.6"(one isn't needed by design anyway).

It's available for short money in 3.42 ratio, ring and pinion only. The carrier in the 1980 rear end has 3.73's with what appears to be a nearly new Auburn Posi.Far as I can tell there are no "thick" gears made for the 8.5,so it's gotta be a 3 series carrier.

The 8.5/8.6 uses the 3 series for 2.73 to 5.13 gears. The 8.5 and 8.6 gears will interchange. You can not use the 8.6 differential in your '80 rear end without upgrading to 30 spline axles. A special bearing is required to use the 8.6 differential in the 8.5 housing.
