gm block casting 3849852 (283)

does anybody know if this block casting #3849852 is one of the 283's that can be bored to 4.00?

All 283's with side mounts cast in can be bored to 4". But you better have it sonic checked. 50 years old blocks can have a lot of internal erosion.

Side mounts is correct. Does the block look like its got waves on the outside were the cylinders are at? There were a few that way, that have heavy walls. Usualy they were in heavy truck to absorb more heat and be stronger. sonic teasting is your real answer.

Hi will, my book tells me that all blocks from 59 to 62 can be bored to 4 in.. your block # is 65- 67. Sonic test is the way to go.. I plan to bore my 283 to a 327 s/j some day. Good Luck jim
