Can the pedal shaft end of one of these be removed and changed...I acquired a new chrome unit with a threaded pedal end and the one out of my G Body Cutlass has a eye on the end of the shaft...I know its possible to adapt the threaded end to put an eye setup on it but its not threaded all the way and to get the correct length I would have to cut it and re thread it to get the proper length... would be a lot easier to just switch shafts...Can it be done?

IIRC the input shaft is not connected directly to the diaphragm, so in theory it should be possible to replace it w/o needing to crack the housing.

I'd start by looking closely under the felt where the input enters the booster for a retainer clip of some sort. Conceivably by removing it, the shaft might come free.

It might be under some amount of spring pressure, so watch out for that.

Removed both wads of felt, pushed and turned and pulled and twisted to no availe...looked on the web and found a description that said the unit is not normally taken apart or servicable but replaced...I just want to switch out my rod with a hole in the end to fit my brake pedal with the threaded one

Did you look at it to see if there's a retainer clip of some sort under the felt?

I didn't want to break the diaphram seal, so I've been searching the web for a diagram to see what is what...haven't found one yet but your saying the pedal shaft is not connected to the vacuum pressure of the unit so it must be held by some kind of clip...Will continue to look for an illustration so I won't break it...Nothing wrong with the one in there now that I put back in just, the chrome one is so shiney

I found out how to get the shaft out... 1 picture worth a 1000 words, I'll buy another with an eye on the end of the shaft

I am not clear on what you did, Did you just lever out the rod or is there a retaining clip some where?

the pic I found on the web is of someone dismantling an old corvette booster...it is just seated in there with some rubber seals a spring so it will back off the plunger and some metal seats holding everything together...with the importance factor of being able to stop after going really fast I'll just buy another with the correct shaft instead...

Seems odd that it's just a press fit. I'd have thought there's be some redundancy built in, but I suppose the way it's assembled there's no way for anything to become dislodged and fall out. But still, just seems kinda cheesy to me.

only 5 photos per post so so to make a long process shorter the last photo in this post will be pounding the guts of the unit after a good cleaning back in it with a hammer and a piece of wood...Cheesy?...Kinda but it works for this old school Corvette...

Maybe cheesy is a bit harsh, but it's the same kind of stamped steel/no paint/cheapest bidder type parts that the US automakers have used to max the profit margin for many years.

BTW, that is the same type booster used for millions of domestic vehicles, not just corvettes. The only real difference is packaging. So we're all in the same boat.

Just a quick FYI, we just got improved software that lets us copy/paste an address (url) into a post and the software will format it into a click-to-view link, complete w/the title. The address is the "http" string usually found at the top of the screen.

Example is this thread, all I'm posting is the "http" address (h ttp://www.hotrodders.com/forum/gm-brake-booster-226968.html) and I get: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/gm-b...er-226968.html. This works for most pages you go to. Above, I added a space between the h and t to make the link not work so I could show it as an example.

PDF files don't format that way, but the link is still "clickable, like: http://www.gates.com/oreilly/tech_ti...oilTechTip.pdf

Hope this helps a little.
