Are GM calipers with o rings any good

I live in ohio. The guide bolts on my gm vehicles always rust up. The o rings never have a bit of grease that I put on them left when I service the brakes. Yes, I use grease made for brake applications. Just seems like calipers that are made to seal out water and contaminants usually have the sliding mechanisms last much longer.
Right now Im trying to get my brakes working good on my s10 1986. Rotors are dark in color(glazed?). Every gm vehicle Ive had always had a hard pedal with less than what I would think satisfactory stopping power. Thinking cheap crappy pads have something to do with it. Gonna try out ceramic pads next. Really would like my s10 to stop good as the wife drives it as a grocery getter. Any tips are appreciated.
