I just read that and I was headed over here to create an identical post asking the same question. I would like to know what benefit there would be for GM and Chrysler. They are both struggling automakers and I know at least GM is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy.

I've felt for a while that GM has needed to consolidate its existing car lines. Possibly send another "legacy" brand the way of Oldsmobile and possibly combine the GMC and Chevy truck lines into one line. What would acquiring Chrysler do for them? GM would then have three truck lines as well as two more car lines.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to merge with GM. I can imagine that they are so ripe for the purchase right now. They just borrowed another $71m just to sustain operations through 2010.

They're hurting bad. Rumor has it that they are starting to sit down with Toyota and actually entertain the offers.

Rumors starting? What then is Nummi? (it's not like they are arch enemies)

GM and Toyota have been in a joint venture in Fremont since 1984.

I am glad I was not drinking a soda when I read that.

GM and Mopar have done some joint projects on drive train parts development.

The auto industry is going to interesting the next few years.. If these dinosaur companies do not change ... they will be like the dinosaurs.

It never ceases to amaze me that a sinking business wants to grab hold of another sinking business with the thoughts that this endeavor would save them. As Ross Perot said "...that great sucking sound....". as both GM and Chrysler swirl down the drain. There may be many die hard union members on this board and what I have to suggest will be offensive to them, but think about this. The Big Three Need to shut down their companies and dis miss all their employees and then start all over again with new facilities, equipment and workers. Then they can compete with Toyota, Mercedes, BMW, Honda, Subaru etc that have started with a clean sheet manufacturing in the USA. Realistically all assembly line workers do not work for GM: they work for UAW and it is impossible to serve two masters!!! I have been amazed that the Bit Three have survived this long.

Now I will pull my extremities back into my shell for the in-coming.

I always called it "Sleeping together"

I think I recall S-10 pick-ups and GEO Prizms rolling out of there in 91-92.

(I had a part-time job at a printshop directly across the street)

Tuesday I'm picking up about 500 shares of GM stock. If a merger goes through it will go way up. I would purchased Chrysler stock but its price 20 cents higher..... which ironically makes sense.

You really buying shares?? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Buddy ,you wanna buy a Bridge??

Chrysler and GM merging will just make Kirk Kerkorian even more unearned money. In actual fact it seems like he is merely unloading a giant suck he bought from Daimler AG.

He is right. Buy the shares low and now, when/if the merger goes through, stock prices will rise either way, whether they merge or do not merge.
