it's the 260 hp engine.. summits listing it as 195hp but if you read the whole product info. it says 260 with the right intake and etc..
it's 195hp as installed in the vehicles listed as direct replacements for..
this has a flat tappet cam and old style heads..

the 350 vortec is 2000.00 and is 255hp as installed in the 96-2000 truck or 300+ installed with intake,carb,headers.. has roller cam and vortec heads light years better than the older set up..
and worth the extra 470.00 iirc the short block is 1200 ish for the 260hp gen 1 engine..
jegs/summit/pace seem to have the best pricing.. tho. your local dealer might match it.. jegs was the only one when I bought mine not adding the 100.00 core charge to the cost..
I bought mine from jegs 1919.00 out the door free shipping.. vortec350 iirc 12530283 vortec ending with a 3 is 4 bolt the one ending with a 2 is 2 bolt block

act fast. g.m. sold all the tooling for the gen 1 engines. and no telling where they'll be made.. 3 guesses 1st 2 don't count

The warranty should apply on any 69 to 85 GM vehicle that woulda came with a 350 engine I would think......Never mind,Jeg's says 73 to 85. SD says 69 to 85.I guess it depends on who you buy from.

How important is a warranty? Do you have any performance goals in mind or just want enough power to move from A-B? Are you any good at engine work yourself?
Im thinking a new short block and having you finish off the build wirh reasonable priced after market heads/manifold/carb,,,

im interested in a nice cruiser but not a turtle. warrenty is very important. i wonder would the 290hp be worth the extra 500. both say performance engines with around 8.1 compression.

Crate 350

I did a lot research when I bought first one. They are all basically the same motor. The 290 has a cheap Chevy factory cam, that's the difference. The warranty from Chevy is good no matter what you put it in (as far as I can find out). I would go through a dealer not aftermarket. Check with who you buy it from. As far as HP ratings it depends how it was rated in a car in a given year. 185 was the lowest rating given to the base engine so that's what they went with, as not to over rate it and get in trouble. I have two and they have proven to be good crusers. One in a 41 Kustom Buick and one in my car I travel in, a 34 ply sedan. You can get into a chevy crate motor site and do some reasearch on it there. Good Luck with your choice.

If you want a crate engine and want it built by GM,(for GM) I think the 383 would be better for your application. The 290 hp,350, would be a big disappointment. When I bought my Corvette, the previous owner had a rebuilt 355 put in it,I dyno tuned it. With 205 rwhp and 275 ish pounds torque and a 4 speed,it was less than fun to drive.Put that same engine in a heavy truck and I doubt you will be impressed,,,

The 290 & the 260 are outdated slugs. The cam in the 290 is not worth the extra $500.It is designed to make power up high & the engine doesn't have the CR to support it.They will both be gas hogs & very inefficient. If I had to choose between the 2,I'd buy the 260 for $500 less & cam it properly for the CR it has & save $500 for better upgrades.

There are a few other differences between the 2,but,irrelavent for the intended purpose. The 290 has a nodular iron crank vs plain cast,& it has slightly better rods, but, again, nothing worth 500 $$$.
It's hard to believe GM is still offering these.I guess they have their place.
