Gm engine

I have a Gm 400 v-8 with a 570 lift roller cam. When I turn it off the engine diesels. we have adjusted the timing and the carburator. It has hydronic roller lifters. What can be done?

What's your idle speed and timing set at? I'm assuming it's also running rich.

If it idles too high you can add an idle stop solenoid.Try fixing the problem first,,,carb/timing/cooling.

Idle speed is about 900. Timing is about 10 btdc. It is rich but runs good. Our vacuum manifold gauge suggests late valve opening. Plugs are black and sooty. I,question whether hydraulic lifters are adjusted properly. Only problem is when we turn it off there is no pinging or knocking. we have tried to,adjust timing to 6 - 15 degrees and everything in between and still had problem when we turned it off.

GM 400 engine

Sounds like it could be an ignition problem and fuel problem. Read this article it will teach you to tune your advance curve on your distributor. http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...EI_distributor. Look at the section on Holley idle transfer slot. What happens is you don't have enough initial timing to keep the engine running. So what's the first thing you do, turn the idle screw on the carburetor to keep the engine running. What kind of carburetor are you using? What year is the motor. Is it high compression? Are you using GM heads. Pull the valve cover and get the casting # to find out what year. If it's a pre-71 use AC R43 plugs, Autolite 3014, NGK BR6S or 3522. If 1972 or later use R43TS, NGK UR4 or 2271, Autolite 24
