Hello. I have a GM govlock carrier and I want to swap ring and pinion to a 3.73..Do I have to use OEM gm gears or can I use aftermarket gears.? Also How can you tell the difference between 2 series and 3 series? Thanks
Is this all installed in an axle or are you wanting to know if you have a carrier loose (i.e. not attached to anything to give you an indication of ratio) how to tell what series it is?
I personally wouldn't use a Gov-lock for anything but maby a small boat anchor or a door stop (I don't even think it would do a good job at those tasks). I have seen too many that looked like someone pulled the pin on a gernade and tossed it into the diff.
This is one example of how they got the name Gov-bomb
Oh My! I have a loose carrier (still in 1 piece) ..What kind of brute force power plant was behind that mess...?I think I feal sick now..
I have a sb 400 -30 over --515 bump stick--some other mild work---and a nasty turbo 350---just looking to hook up rear tires a bit...After looking at that pick ,looks like i'll be spending some more cash...Thanks for replay!
That was behind a stock 350 TBI in a 4wd K5. That one went out while using 35" tires. I have another friend that had the same thing happen while pulling out of his driveway on 33" tires.
The problem with gov-locks is that they lock based on differential wheel speed. One tire has to get going about 100rpm faster then the other tire is going and then it will lock up (with a jerk and a bang). It is that shock loading that makes them go boom.
A much better diff to use is the 28-spline torsen's out of late moddle f-bodies. You used to be able to buy them from SLP (I think) as take out units for $99...but I think they dried up their supply.
What will it be in and what will you use it for?
Sorry to burst your bubble...but better now then when your's looks like that.
I have also noticed that when gov-lok's get dirty inside, it hangs the gov racket pawl until there is probably 200 or 300 rpm difference and then it goes in with a big bang. If your foot is in it that is probably the end of the day.
It was going to go in an 84 cutlass w/255-60-15's in a 10 bolt 7.5
I'd like to get an 8.5 Buick GN rear, but trying to work with what I got. It's a shame cause I have New 3.73 gears to go with it. Just a weekend crusier.
didnt take me long to be convinced...Don't want that to happin to me!!!!!!...Just bought an eaton posi NIB.Thanks for the walk through on GOV bombs....Any1 want to buy a GOV lock real cheap...Unfortanate the eaton wuzint...But like they say you get what you pay for.
Thanks every1..for input
