Thanks tm454, I looked at the threads with a magnifier and didn't see any damage. I'm guessing my column is from a first gen camaro/firebird, and I'm not real sure about the column the donor nut came from (I remember moving a bust T top out of the way, so it had to be mid seventies- early 70's), so it's prolly metric.
I'm glad you mentioned that the nut should go down easily (clears up that should I crank it down or not question).
Gonna stop by my favorite parts store this afternoon and just buy a couple different ones if they have them.
