I have a 86 monte ss with 23k miles on it and the trans also makes a whining sound in 1st gear only. Its a 200r4 and I was thinking it was straight cut gears in teh planetary gears? And if I wanted my th400 in my c10 to whine, will straight cut gears make it do that- and it so where do you buy them?

turbo 400's did have an option of having straight cut planets, mostly for heavy duty trucks, and motorhomes. as far as the 2004r goes, i have yet to see 1 with straight cut gears.

Most 2004R's I've seen do whine in 1st gear. Low/Rear planetary.

Sounds acceptable, as in not going to cause a problem. If you hear or feel grinding or vibration then it's bad. I've heard many that are louder than that and a few quieter.
