GMC Instument Cluster

Have my instument cluster out of my '74 GMC 1500 changing bulbs and repairing broken ground wire from harness to firewall and noticed that one of the cluster lamp holders has this weird pigtail coming off of it that leads to a plastic tab that is riveted to the front of the metal dash panel behind the cluster. The pigtail itself seems to be made of this really thin plastic film and there may be fine wires in it.
Anyone know what this is and what purpose it serves?
Thanks in advance.

That's a fiber optic cable and it is used to provide illumination to the ash tray or heater control if I remember correctly.

I tried one reply, but it didn't seem to work.

From what I remember, I think that tab is for the back-light on the wiper switch.

Thanks for the replies, guys. It is located right behind the w/w switch, it's just no longer conducting light.
Thanks again.
