Going to check out a 1984 Step. Any tips?
I never thought this is something I would be doing. But I'm going to go check out a 84 Step van. My girlfriend works in the fashion world and has an ambition to have a "fashion truck." There are none in the Philly area and can be money makers if executed well. It wouldn't be the first time she had a good idea. So I want a piece of this and will get it via the truck. I found one, miles unknown;
*3 year old goodwrench 350
*4 speed manual
*dually, new tires
*disk brakes all the way around
* no rot, a little surface rust in spots
*owner believes 5:xx something gears (not thrilled)
*he hasn't driven it in a couple years, but he said it runs good.

I'm going to check it out Saturday, it's about 70 miles away. If it seems good I may buy it and have to drive it back. I'm going to see if I can trick AAA into towing it.

Does anyone know if these P20 step vans share a chassis with any more common chevy trucks, like a K30?

If I buy it I'm going to try to get AAA to tow it so I don't have to work out the bugs on the 75 mile ride home. I called them to see if they would do it and was told "well our policy says we won't tow step vans, but we would tow a truck that's the same size, so call in for a tow and hopefully the driver who shows up will do it. I think a big tip upfront will get me a tow.

If it's a dually,it's probably a P-30-10,000 lb GVW. I maintained a fleet of them,ranging from 74 to 94. Most likely,unless the truck was built to an oddball spec,it'll have either 4.11 or 4.56 gears. In this part of the country,most of them are either Grumman - Olson or Union City bodies-aluminum construction on steel frame. Places to check for rust are the front fenderwells (particularly under the battery) and the radiator support. These trucks use the same independent front suspension as the C-30-and has the same problem areas-idler arms,inner a-frame bushings and lower ball joints. Check the u-joints in the steering shaft also-even though they aren't hard to hit with a grease gun,they seem to not get lubed like they should be.
Some chassis parts are available through GM-but Workhorse Chassis is the current manufacturer of the bare chassis and you may need to source some stuff from them.
Best thing about these trucks-bodies last forever-wear parts like door latches,etc have been the same for years and easily available online from body manufacturer.
