Is this a Good buy?

Well after i priced out all the stuff to build my SBC i found this one for sale and think it might be a good fit for me. Just want to know if its a good buy? and what kind of power output i can expect out of it? Will it is a good street motor?

Below is all the information the owner has provided me with so far:

355 SBC
TRW .100 dome forged pistons
11.1:1 compression
GM steel crank
5.7" rods with ARP rod bolts,
Crane .630" solid roller cam
Crane Gold rockers
Edelbrock aluminum Victor Jr. heads 2.08/1.60 valves 64cc chambers 215cc runners, ARP head studs
Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake
Holley 750 double pumper
SFI balancer
4 bolt main block bored .030 over. Block was line honed as well.

The owner claim that it will make 485-500hp on 91 oct pump gas.

Can he verify the parts are there? If this is going in a street car? I seriously question living very long with claimed 11:1 on pump gas (I estimate it at 10.65, a .100 dome volume is only about 2.4 cc give or take). You have cam specs? How did he come up with 485 to 500 HP? Buyer beware...

I was going to say the same thing, sounds more like a race motor to me....2.08/1.60 valves!!, never use them on the street. Do you know this guy? anyone can claim anything, you see guys on this forum...."yea it's got about 450 hp" did they dyno it? no just guessing. The nice thing about building your own engine is that YOU KNOW what's in it, not what some guy "claims" is it it.....again buyer beware.

I would get more detail about the build and see if he can answer without a stutter!! he should tell you everthing from opening closing points on the cam to head gasket compresses thickness, ring bore size, quench, deck height etc...Then ask him The big question.. what is the Dynaimc Compression of the engine , That right there will tell you if you can run on pump gas.. with aluminum h.eads 8.0-8.8 DCR max I say to run on 93 octain. He should be able to tell you this, if not he is not a true engine builder!!

Like has been said- that's more race than street. A lot depends on what you want to put it in, what you want to use it for, what the gear ratio and torque converter stall is, etc. And if you're willing to change everything that may need changing to make the engine work w/the vehicle. That alone could cost more than the engine!

As suggested, run the DCR to see what you come up with. If it has to run w/the total timing retarded from max power timing, that's a huge waste of power. You could run less CR and less cam and still make more power- if this needs retarded timing to run on the street w/pump gas.

Worst case scenario- if this engine is legit, the cam, pistons and intake can be changed and the engine would then be good on the street. Sell the take-offs to fund the replacement parts. I for one would NEVER run an engine w/o taking it down to check bearing clearances, crank end float, ring end gap, piston to wall clearances, deck clearance/quench, etc.

Good luck.
