Is this a good buy?

While browsing the HDC website, I found this cable winch. 1000 lb pull of 3/16" cable. Sure looks like it would beat the old come-a-long and chain. I'm not overly knocked out about three bolts to mount it, but I am a rodder. And you can alway improve things, right?

In a while, Chet.

The price is certainly reasonable. How could you go wrong?

If you are going to use it to pull a car up onto a trailer....Nope!!!! That 1000 lbs. rating is for pulling on lever ground, preferably asphalt, smooth, coated with sealer twice, etc. They have fine print on the boxws that you do not see until after the thing is bought. I bought an electric winch at a swapmeet that was rated for something like 3000 lbs. You attached a plate to the trailer, the winch attached to it (it was removable), long cords to hook to the battery, and a remote. It was a good thing it had an auxillary handle with it. Weimer and I used it a couple of times but it was a POS. Once a car starts to go up ramps on a trailer, your angle of pull changes, therefore decreasing the pulling capacity by quite a bit. If you had all the angles and heights you could mathematically figure it out but I would suppose it would be the same as increasing the weight of the vehicle about 4 times. I wouldn't waste my money if I were you. Take that money and then some and save it back for a good winch.

My dad might have an old grain elevator cable winch that uses (I believe) 1/2" cable. I remember it was heavy as snot to use, and probably needs new cable by now. I'll have to look and see when we are there again.

In a while, Chet.
