Good bye old friend

I haven't been on here to much lately, just been busy doing other things. I finally got my truck cleared and now I need to get the flames outlined, then it should be done, on the outside at least. One of my best friends had to go in the hospital about three weeks ago, he wasn't feeling to good so he decided to go to the doctors and get checked out and they ended up admitting him. He ended up getting two stents in his arteries, that went well and they sent him home. Early last month he had pulled the engine to replace his oil pan gasket, his little hot rod is a 48 GMC with a blown 454, anyway the engine hadn't been put back in the truck before he had to go into the hospital. A day after coming home he got real sick and couldn't catch his breath, back to the doctors he goes and now they tell him he has phenomena, so they keep him for a couple more days and while he's in there he seemed to get better, as soon as he gets back home he's worse than before. this time he goes to a different hospital and he is diagnosed with a tumor in his left lung and with in five days he is gone. I got the chance to talk to him a couple of hours before he passed, so I feel good about that, but man it really sucks. He was one real good guy, when you talked to Mel you got the real deal, a real straight shooter, if he said he would help you he would be there early, if he said no he meant no. Nothing false about him, to him a handshake was the contract, no paper work with him. when I was building my truck he would stop and watch and he would always say " Dude, your doing a hell of a job on that truck, to bad I'm not a truck guy" He always had some kind of hot rod, 32 coupe, couple of 57 chevys, 40 chevy, 36 ford but never a truck," nope don't like trucks" until he came home from a swapmeet one day with this flamed out 48 GMC and he stopped at the the house to show me. he came walking in the shop and looked at me said" hey dude I guess I'm a truck guy now" . It was his pride and joy, and it broke his heart that he couldn't put it back together, so we could cruise together. Well Mel passed away this passed Monday and his son, Steve and his son Steve jr and myself got the truck all back together last night so it will be at his funeral and at my car show on Sunday and when my wife came home today from work right in front of our house were to nice long black marks in the road, she looked at me a little funny and said, who did that, and all I said was that Mel stopped in to say hello.

I'll dedicate my next burnout to him-

Sorry to hear about your loss, that must be hard. You know where to come if you feel the need to talk cars.

That really sucks, but it is a beutiful thing, a man and his truck.
That was a great thing you did for him with his truck, I hope that when the time comes for me to go, someone will bring my truck along.

great story, sad but thats part of life... He'll always live in your memories. Thats an awesome thing you guys are doing for him.

An old friend of mine passed away a couple years ago (sure doesnt seem that long ago) and a few of his family members took out his favorite cars (about 6-7) for the funeral, I was lucky enough to get my zephyr when his wife was selling off the collection and will fix it up all original like he had planned... well almost, gotta add my own touches too

I would say he was fortunate to have a friend like you as much as you were blessed by knowing him. Touching story.

It's tough losing a friend, especially one that shares the same interests. Seems you spend more time with them. I lost a good buddy 5 years ago. He had his 69 Camaro and I had my Chevy powered rigs. We would always stick up for each other when it came to the "Brand" wars......................I miss him.

I am sure you miss your friend too.

too bad my car is better at cruising around town than it is smoking the tires. If it were any good I'd dedicate my next burnout to him. Until then, I recommend www.musclecarcalendar.com for nice burnouts and muscle car stuff.
